See their faces in golden rays

She is six years old when she tears her favorite pink bunny rabbit.  His ear gets caught on something and without knowing it she rips the ear off going up the stairs.  Salome is mortified and in tears over what she is sure is the death of this beloved friend and companion.  Carrying the body and the ear that's hanging on by a thread, she struggles up the stairs to her father's study.  It's hard to walk the narrow stairs with tears in your eyes, especially since the world tends to get blurry and she's trying so hard to calm down so he doesn't see her like this.  He'll be upset if he sees her crying.  She almost succeeds too, but when she knocks on the door, and he tells her to come in and she pushes her way inside - she loses it again.

There is usually a reason why children cry, it is a survival instinct given to them at birth to make sure they are allowed some sort of means to alert their parent that they are in need or in danger.  So when a child cries there is usually a reason for it, and when a child cries louder it is usually to get a parents attention, to alert them that they are hurt.  Liam Collins perhaps skipped this day in child development classes, or just wasn't loved enough as a boy.  Either way he believes that children should not cry, as it is a sign of weakness - he tolerates it in very small babies and those so young that they can not understand but Salome should have learned to stop the water works at age five.

He gets up, annoyed when he sees her crying in his door way and strides over to send her on her way when he sees the stuffed animal in her hands.

"What do we have here, lass?  A wounded soldier?"  His Irish accent is still thick, he doesn't bother hiding it especially around his daughter and he kneels down in front of his little girl.

Salome nods slowly, sniffling and wiping her eyes with the back of her hand and trying not to cry any more in front of her father.  So far it's working but she's afraid that if she actually has to speak that she'll start crying once more.  Liam watches his only daughter for a good long time before reaching into his pocket and taking out his handkerchief and wiping her nose and face off.

"There, that's better, big girls don't cry, yeah?  Let's see if we can't patch Pickles up now."  He scoops Salome up into his arms and carries her over to his desk.  Sitting down with her in his lap, he opens his desk drawer and pulls out a sewing kit and hums as he starts the slow process of matching thread and fabric before starting to sew the ear back on to the rabbit.

Salome loves to sit on her father's lap and listen to him hum or talk.  She presses her ear to his chest and listens to his big voice bounce around in his chest, booming and vibrating, it's the most soothing thing in the world.  Her nanny tells her stories of how he use to walk her around when she was a baby, singing to her and dancing with her and Salome figures this is why she likes being so close to him now because it reminds her of being a little baby.

She keeps her eyes half open through out the surgery, making sure he doesn't hurt Pickles.  It's hard to keep them open though, crying has taken a lot out of her and the heat from his body along from the sounds of his voice and breath soon have her drifting off.  Even though she's six years old, she still sucks her thumb, another habit that annoying the piss out of Liam but he tolerates it as long as he doesn't see it throughout the day.  Now, as he finishes up with the rabbit, he sits back in his chair and takes a slow sip of his whiskey before looking down at the girl in his arms.

Setting the glass down he carefully shifts her so she is more firmly against his chest, his fingers move through her silky blond hair.  It's so long and so fine, he hasn't been cut yet so it still baby fine and it feels amazing through his fingers.  He bows his head and kisses her forehead and then her mouth, it's a light kiss but when she whimpers and starts to respond he pulls away and goes back to stroking her hair.  It doesn't take long before she falls back to sleep against her father's chest, happy, content and none the wiser knowing he'll protect her.
