    It was a nice, warm summer night, the sun had gone down and it had cooled down to the point where you could sit outside and not sweat.  The drive in, was two screens, a parking lot, and hills that surrounded the parking lot and gave a perfect view of the cars and the screen.  Salome had walked from her house, and bought two tickets before climbing up on one of the hills and spread the blanket her grandmother had given her.

A grandmother, yeah that was still weird.

Sitting down on the blanket, she put the basket down next to her and took out a bottle of water.  Once she took a long drink, she text messaged Hiro to know that she was there.  Hopefully he would be able to spot her.

Hiro puts an arm around her. He wonders how he could ever have gotten so lucky to have such a beautiful woman love him. He hopes that Jonba likes him. He knows that he'll be very charming to her grandparents, but he hopes they don't share her father's prejudices. He knows even in America a pretty white girl with a geeky nihon'jin will raise eyebrows. But he doesn't care. Those people will just have to live with it.

Between her warmth and the sun, he's soon asleep.

Her eyelids grow heavy as she listens to his heart, the slow and steady rhythm, and the faint noises of the outside world. She thinks about falling asleep next to him and waking up to him every morning. About being domestic, making dinner for him and Jonba when Hiro comes home from work. It's a wonderful picture and she finds herself smiling despite how tired she is and the worry she feels about being with him.

She murmurs a bit, maybe trying to tell her lover something, but the words are jumbled and she falls asleep as soon as they leave her mouth.

Hiro wakes up a few hours later, spooned up behind her. Traffic noises have increased as people come home. His arms gently hug her closer as he kisses the nape of her neck. The sun is low, bathing the room in reds and oranges.

She stirs in her sleep, whimpering at the gentle touch and snuggling back against the warm body behind her. In her sleep addled mind she slowly wonders who she's up against, and when she sees the red around her she panics. Jerking away from him, she sits up quickly and wraps her arms around herself, as if that would protect her.

"Nnn . . . No. Stop."

Hiro is wide awake now. He doesn't attempt to touch her, because he's not sure what will happen if he does. "Salome?"

It takes her a few moments to realize where she is, and that she's not still stuck in the dream. When she does, she gives Hiro a sleepy smile before slowly laying back down in his arms. "Sorry, I was having a weird dream." Down against his chest, she turns her body to snuggle up to him, kissing his skin lightly she sighs.

He gently strokes her shoulder and her hair, trying to banish the effects of her dream. "Do you remember it at all?" He gently kisses the top of her head.

"Mmmhmmm. . " She makes the noise because she doesn't want to actually speak. Taking his hand she places it over her racing heart and laughs. "Woo, that a rush, it's like I ran a marathon!" Reaching behind her she pushes the hair away from the back of her neck, her skin is damp with sweat. "Everyone was touching me, holding me down, and it made me feel bad, dirty. They weren't really human, they were like ghouls, or corpses."

Hiro shudders. "That is awful. I would not want to be held by a corpse or ghoul. It would make me feel bad, too." He's worried that she'll equate being held by him with these nightmares. He continues to caress her gently.

"It's all over now, it's okay, Hiro-kun." Tilting her head up she kisses his mouth lightly. "Wow, what a rush, dreams like that always makes me really happy to wake up."

He kisses her back, gently caressing her cheek. "I would hate to be trapped in a dream likethat - no way to escape." He's had a few nightmares like that. "I hate those. When it feels like there's nothing left. When it feels like it will never end."

Lightly she presses against his fingers his as she nuzzles his cheek, happy to be awake and in his arms. The dream doesn't feel that bad with him here. "Do you have nightmares like that? Where you can't get out no matter how fast you run or how hard you struggle."

"I have awful nightmares. Where the world ends and I have to watch it happen over and over again. And I hear their screams, even though I am no longer on Earth." He shudders. "I understand that feeling of not being able to escape. Of being trapped and nothing you do will make whatever let you go. Waking up is so much better."

Sighing softly she wraps her arms around him and lightly embraces him. Her fingers move through his hair as she kisses his forehead, she can't even imagine something that horrible. Her nightmares pale in comparison. "That must be so horrible, to have to listen to that, to watch it. Do you have them often?"

He sighs deeply as her arms go around him and relaxes completely. "No, usually they come when I am utterly exhausted, completely frustrated or frightened. Most of the time, my dreams are rather silly or about me being in TV shows."

"When your mind is scared, huh?" Eyes close and she puts her cheek on his soft hair. Fingers move up and down his back, rubbing in slow circles as smiles only a little bit. "TV shows?"

Hiro nods. "For months after I got back from the past and found out about my father's murder I had them almost every night. But it was always better when someone was here. Ando spent a lot of nights here during that time." He smiles a bit wanly. "I have dreamed of being on silly game shows or in superhero movies."

Nodding slowly she continues to stroke his hair, letting the strands twirl around her fingers. "You are lucky to have such a good friend in Ando, that he is there for you. It is always good to have someone to keep the dreams away, like a dream catcher." Smiling brightly she leans down to kiss his cheek, "if you could be any superhero, who would you be?"

"Ando is a very good friend. I wrote to him while I was in the past and left the scrolls in the hilt of Kensei's sword. In the future, he had the sword, so he could read them. He said he took it to an archivist so he could read it, becaue some of them had been a little damaged after all those years." He grins at her kiss. "I would be Superman." There is no hesitation whatsoever.

"You must think a great deal about him, to do that, to communicate though all those years, when you were going through all that with Kensei. You are such a caring soul, Hiro, with how you care for your friends, and your dreams." Closing her eyes, she leans back and moved her hand down his chest before taking a deep breath. "Why Superman?"

"I felt bad leaving him behind. But I could not take him back with me to fight Sylar. If he had returned to New York with me, he might have died." He takes a deep breath. He knew the second he saw his future counterpart's eyes that Ando had died in that future. "Because Superman is cool and he is a really good guy."

"You had to do what you had to in order to save his life. It was worth it, wasn't it?" Watching him carefully she slid the tip of his finger down his jaw and the over his chin. "I like Superman too, and Clark Kent is very handsome with his glasses."

"Yes, it was very worth it. Without Ando I was a very hard man. A cruel man."

Of course, right now he doesn't have his glasses on. "I think that Christopher Reeves was the best movie Superman. He was the best at making people believe that Superman and Clark Kent were not the same person."

"I can not see you as a cruel man," but she has seen it, when she saw how angry he got at her father.

"I would have to agree with you, but I think you can be my Superman any time you want." A slow smile spreads over her mouth as she nods and then leans forward to press her lips against his.

"Although I can be that angry, that cruel, I do not wish to be that way always. He - my future self - could not let go of his anger. Not that I could blame him. He lost everything. He failed to do what needed to be done."

Hiro kisses her gently, then with increasing passion. He doesn't; however, pull her closer, just in case she's still having some problem with the dream.
