Pierre Bonnard 1867-1947
Aug. 10th, 2008 06:25 am Pierre Bonnard painted the same woman for over forty years. Her name was Marthe, he met her in Paris when she was twenty-seven and she was sixteen. She worked in a shop making funeral wreaths for graves. They lived together, and then married her, and never got over her death in 1940.
In the forty years she never changes in his pictures, he always sees her in the same youthful, beautiful light that he first saw her in. That's an amazing type of love, don't you think?
One of his earliest paintings of her is this. This painting was created many years later.
